Your auction ended with no bids. eBay's relist button just creates another auction nobody wanted. What you actually want is a fixed-price Buy It Now listing — and eBay won't convert it for you. Here's the path that works, including the four rejection traps nobody documents.
Why auctions die unsold (and why relisting the auction fails)
Low-ticket collectibles — $2 VHS tapes, $4 paperbacks — routinely end with zero bids. The starting price isn't the problem; the format is. Nobody sets an alarm for a $3 auction ending Tuesday. But the same item at a fair fixed price sells to the next person who searches for it. eBay's Relist keeps the auction format, and its API call for converting auction→fixed-price (RelistFixedPriceItem) flatly rejects auction originals: "Valid Listing type..." There is no conversion. There is only a fresh listing.
The working path: a fresh fixed-price listing
Publish the ended item afresh with AddFixedPriceItem, carrying over everything worth keeping:
- Title, description, category, condition, price — straight from the original.
- Photos — reuse the eBay-hosted image URLs. No downloading, no re-uploading.
- Shipping block — carry over the original's exact service and costs.
- Store category — file it where browsers actually look.
- 1-day handling — also a Top Rated Seller prerequisite.
We ran 32 dead VHS auctions through exactly this path. Thirty-one published cleanly as Buy It Now listings in the store's VHS category.
The four rejection traps
- 1. No photos. Error 21919136: "Add at least 1 photo." Ended items sometimes shed their picture data — verify images exist before publishing, or the whole call dies.
- 2. No shipping service. Error 21915469: a listing with no shipping block is rejected outright. This is why carrying over the original's shipping isn't optional.
- 3. Missing package weight. Error 717: calculated shipping needs weight and dimensions, which live outside the shipping block in eBay's data. Forget them and the call fails.
- 4. Missing Item Specifics. Error 21919303: some categories mandate specifics (tapes need Type). Carry the original's over verbatim. Also note the $0.99 floor — sub-dollar auction starts can't become fixed-price listings at their old price.
Don't duplicate sold inventory
One real hazard: the twin listing. If two listings covered the same physical item and one sold, eBay still reports the other as innocently "unsold" — relisting it creates a phantom listing for inventory that's gone. Always cross-check candidates against recent sold titles, not just active ones. We caught one this way (a Fifth Element / 12 Monkeys two-pack whose twin had sold) and ended the duplicate before it could oversell.
Doing it by hand vs. in one sentence
Manually: GetItem, copy twelve fields, dodge four error codes, publish — about 10 minutes per item, so an afternoon per thirty. With SellDeck's AI assistant: "Relist my unsold VHS tapes to the VHS store category." You get a dry-run list, say yes, and poll progress while it works through the queue — skips, photos checks, twin-sold guard and all.
